Wild Summer Dining

17 July 2024

Immerse yourself in the great outdoors this summer, when Gleneagles’ Glorious Playground becomes a picturesque backdrop for a stunning series of seasonal picnics.

The seasons may shift and the weather conditions are sure to surprise but the sweeping landscapes of Perthshire never fail to take the breath away. With the advent of warmer weather and longer days, the glens, lochs, forests and mountains that surround the Gleneagles estate become a backdrop for all manner of outdoor adventures, among which summer picnics – a tradition dating back to Victorian times – remains a perennial favourite.

Today, the sight of a Land Rover winding its way up into the hills laden with blankets and baskets is one of the estate’s most stirring images. Our picnics epitomise true Scotland and allow people to see the very best of the region – the rugged landscapes, the heather, the hills, and the feeling of being immersed in unspoiled scenery. It’s something that should be on everyone’s bucket list when they come to Gleneagles – you never quite know what you’re going to see: golden eagles, peregrine falcons, majestic red deer or even a chance sighting of the once red-listed pine marten, which is now making a comeback thanks to conservation programmes.

All of which adds an air of excitement to the prospect of wild summer dining at Gleneagles, where – depending on guests’ ambitions – there’s a full sweep of picnic experiences on offer, ranging from perfect packed lunches for on-the-go hikers to bespoke experiences led by our team of outdoor experts. With it being Gleneagles, the cuisine that accompanies each picnic excursion is just as impressive as the surrounding landscapes, with the estate’s team of chefs pulling out all the stops to deliver tailored experiences that are truly unique. Across a series of picnic menus, expect to find elevated fare that pairs hot seasonal soups and crusty sourdough sandwiches with a beautiful buffet spread that includes half-poached Scottish lobster and smoked salmon, Tweed Valley sirloin and heritage tomato salads – as well as the option to toast the day with champagne or a Macallan whisky tasting.

For adventurous families and couples who want to take in some of the region’s finest scenery and experience wide open spaces, our outdoor team can create itineraries venturing further afield through open glens and heather-clad hills, surrounded by towering mountains. Some of these experiences can also involve visits to neighbouring traditional Scottish estates, giving guests the opportunity to witness the way things were done 200 years ago, with some using no motorised transport and instead using Highland ponies as an integral part of estate life.

During summer months there are a vast number of migratory birds and abundant red deer which create a wonderful backdrop. Guests can enjoy sitting in one place having their picnic with a pair of binoculars and never get bored. Combine this with the chance to forage or finesse wildlife photography skills, while children are entertained hopping in and out of rocky pools, makes for a truly relaxing day.

In Perthshire, we are right at the beginning of the Highlands, and in some areas where tectonic plates meet. Depending on how far you venture this can mean rather than being among the hills, you could be on top of the mountain looking down below with unimpeded views as far as the eye can see. Closer to home in our own Glorious Playground, there are standout picnic experiences, among them a stunning set lunch with fully laid tables at a fishing bothy on the bank of Laich Loch, and another set among the rolling Ochil Hills, each within 10 minutes of Gleneagles and both commanding incredible views and with a wonderful choice of walks nearby.

Picnicking is a timeless activity that can have a transformative effect on guests. Picnics slow us down, often in locations where there is no signal, so it becomes a digital-free moment, allowing guests to be fully present with the family. The experience can often be described as ‘grounding’ as quite literally, guests are sat on the ground on beautiful rugs and that has an effect on you. The Victorians recognised why picnicking is good for us – it’s an incredibly mindful thing to do and a way to connect with nature.
