The Full Scoop with Jannettas Gelateria

Gelato perfected over generations

From Lazio to Fife, and now to Perthshire, we’re delighted to welcome Jannettas Gelateria to The Garden Café.

This iconic East Coast institution is in its fifth generation, with the family serving cups and cones from before Gleneagles was even a twinkle in Donald Matheson’s eye.

The Jannettas story begins in 1908, when Benedito Jannetta, his wife Rosa and their four children left Italy’s sun-drenched hills for the Fife coast. They arrived with little more than their recipe books and an appetite for a sweet new adventure. What followed was a family business that was shaped slowly over time, passed from one generation to the next.

Over the years, the cafe has become a mainstay of its home on South Street, where friends would gather for gelato and stay on into the evening, playing billiards after hours. Through the war years they remained a constant source of joy for Scotland’s east coasters, eventually adding a bicycle to their offering, which allowed their gelato to be experienced by even more people.

Fast forward a century or so and the original fior di latte flavour – made with rich, Scottish milk – endures as the most popular choice for punters looking for a sweet treat, but there’s a whole spectrum of flavours to discover. While the originals are sometimes best, the scoops in supporting roles have just as much star quality here. From a menu of more than 50 flavours in St Andrews, we’ve chosen 12 for The Garden Café. Expect much-loved classics like Strawberry, Chocolate and Cookie Dough, alongside sorbets such as Raspberry or Elderflower and Mint. If curiosity gets the better of you, there’s Pistachio and Cherry or Salted Caramel – flavours for the grown-ups who remain young at heart.

The lineup will shift along the way with a couple of new flavours making an appearance each month. Choose a cone, take a couple of scoops in a cup or indulge in a Banoffee Crunch milkshake with all the toppings very much encouraged.

We’ll leave you with Charlie Jannetta’s words, the shop’s third-generation custodian: “[when you visit us] I hope you feel not just the chill of our freshly made gelato, but also the warmth of our family’s love and dedication.”

It’s a sentiment we echo, as we look forward to welcoming you to The Garden Cafe for sweet moments shared with your favourite people.

Buon appetito!
